King Carl X commissioned the building of the Karlsten Fortress in 1658, strategically placed on Marstrand with its ice-free port to protect Bohuslän from hostile attacks. The fortress, designed to withstand military attacks, features thick, round walls and a multi-storey tower. Today, visitors can imagine the battles that occurred here within its mighty walls.
