Grain-mill revival: Montferrer's Farinera de la Trobada

The water-powered mill at Montferrer, or Farinera de la Trobada, is a piece of history transformed into a museum after restoration work. Built in 1911, it was part of the local economy and a trade hub until new technologies for milling grains made it less competitive in the 1960s. The mill's structure didn't allow for necessary modifications, leading to its closure in 1963. Today, there are 26 main machines in operation, along with belts, gears, and chains.

The tanks and pipes are also worth a look, to understand the milling process and appreciate their good condition. The Farinera de la Trobada, a museum of industrial heritage, is a testament to the agricultural past of the region and the ingenuity of its people. It is owned by the Comunitat de Regans del Rec dels Quatre Pobles, a community comprising farmers from Anserall, Castellciutat, Montferrer and Adrall. The restoration work was promoted by the Consell Comarcal de l'Alt Urgell as part of the Ruta dels oficis d'ahir.

A visit to the Farinera de la Trobada is a step back in time, a descent into the slow, steady rhythm of a world where food was processed by hand.
