Bernatoniai Hillfort: A 2nd-Century Dune-Carved Fortress Under Threat

Bernatoniai hillfort, located in the Bajoriškės and Ginio dunes area, Kauno rajono savivaldybės territory, is an ancient relic. Leaning slightly towards the east-west, it measures 35 meters long and 30 meters wide at its widest point. Behind the hillfort is a 30-meter-long, 3.3-meter high, 24-meter-wide ditch. A 4.5-meter-high rampart rises from the ditch, providing entry to a 13-meter-wide, 1.5-meter-deep trench. The hillfort, dating to the 2nd century, towers at 36-38 meters. A protected cultural monument, it has a 26,000 m² protected area and is listed on the Lithuanian Cultural Heritage Register. It is situated near Bernatonių and was constructed from the material of the Bernatonių dvaro mūrinės rūkyklos, dunes.
