Basingwerk Abbey, located in Greenfield in Holywell, is one of Flintshire’s most significant archaeological sites. Originally a 12th-century Cistercian monastery, recent excavations have uncovered evidence of much older activity. In the summer of 2025, archaeologists from Heneb discovered a massive 2000-year-old Roman settlement in nearby fields. This year's excavations focused on further exploring the archaeological potential surrounding the scheduled remains of Basingwerk Abbey, and particularly on investigating the possibility of Roman activity previously identified in a 2023 dig near the abbey's remains. The findings were dominated by Roman archaeology dating to the late first and early second centuries AD, confirming earlier suggestions of a significant Roman presence or influence at the site.
