Bäckaskog Castle in Kristianstad Municipality, Scania, southern Sweden, is a striking blend of medieval austerity and Renaissance opulence. Originally a monastery built in the 13th century, its transformation in the 16th century was sparked by the Reformation, which closed down the monastery. During the years 1584 to 1653, Henrik Ramel and his son Henrik Ramel Junior gave the castle its present appearance. Today, it stands as an iconic example of how the end of one era can pave the way for the beginning of another.
