Ancient ruin in central Meigs County

Discover the ancient secrets of this mysterious structure. Explore the rituals of the Adena people and the symbolism of this National Register-listed site.

Located in Chester Township, the Mound Cemetery Mound is a preserved relic of the Adena people, active between 800 BCE and 100 CE. This Native American mound, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remains in fine condition due to its undisturbed state. The Mound Cemetery Mound is likely to contain remnants of a wooden structure built as a burial site for a prominent member of Adena society. The existence of numerous similar mounds nearby suggests that the Mound Cemetery Mound, like the Reeves Mound in northern Meigs County, was also built by the Adena people. Note that the Mound Cemetery Mound should not be confused with the Longhouse people who arrived in the region much later.
