The overturned sentinel: a rare glimpse of Matalascañas' watchtower

The Torre de la Higuera, locally known as La Peña, El Tapón or simply as La Piedra de Matalascañas, is a ruin declared Bien de Interés Cultural. Constructed in the 16th century as part of Spain’s coastal defences under King Philip II, it once stood tall and proud, a watchtower against corsair and pirate attacks. But a cataclysm, whether the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 or a violent storm, brought it crashing to the sand, its obelisk-like form overturned for all to see. Now, only the foundations remain, offering a rare glimpse of its inverted spire.
