The New Haven District, now known as the Plainville Campground, has been hidden in the wooded heart of Connecticut since 1865. Originally built as a religious retreat for Methodists, it lost its spiritual ties in 1957, transforming into a summer home retreat. Camp Kampen, a brainchild of Connecticut Methodists, had been popular for its religious gatherings, affordability, and moral leanings. The complex was organized around an eight-part maze, with numerous roads snaking through 1-2 story cottages, creating a sprawling web. Designed as an alternative to tents, the cottages now provided temporary quarters for pilgrims. Nestled on 17 acres in Northeastern Plainville, the campground can be found via Gladding Avenue. Roads branch off from Circle Avenue, all converging on the main pavilion.
