The historic Atlas Life Building in downtown Tulsa

Explore the history and architectural features of the Atlas Life Building, a landmark in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Located at 415 S. Boston Avenue East in the heart of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Atlas Life Building is a historic twelve-story structure. Designed by the firm Rush, Endacott and Rush, the building was completed in 1922 and stands sandwiched between the Philtower and Mid-Continent Tower. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on May 19, 2009.

Atlas Life Insurance Company was founded in Tulsa in 1918 and began constructing this high-rise office building within three years. An elaborate ceremony accompanied its grand opening on November 22, 1922. The company's logo incorporated a figure of Atlas, a Titan of ancient Greek mythology, carrying the world on his back. A statue representing this figure sits on top of the building facade. The company remained at this location until 1991.

The building's most recognizable feature is a four-story neon sign above the main entrance, installed in 1946. The facade is faced with red brick and features white marble ornamentation on the third, eleventh, and twelfth floors. After being sold to new owners in 2008, the building was adapted for reuse as the Courtyard by Marriott Tulsa Downtown hotel in 2010. Today, the ground floor houses the Tulsa Press Club, Baytide Petroleum, and The New Atlas Grill.
