In the heart of Ávila, Castilla y León, Spain, lies Church of San Miguel, one of 11 parishes listed in the inventory of Cardinal Gil Torres in 1250. The Montalvo family, its founders and patrons, can still be seen through their coat of arms on the tombs and interior archives. The church, which operated without major alterations for centuries, underwent renovations during the 16th century, including the commission of Marcos Pinilla to paint the retablo. The retablo, composed of thirteen tablets organised in five aisles and three pieces, represents pairs of saints in a style similar to that of Berruguete, separated by architectural divisions.
