The Palacio de los Cuadrilleros sits in a sunny plaza in Palazuelo de Vedija, in the heart of Spain's wine country. It should be a sleepy corner, but the palace inside has a mood of its own. It was built in the 17th century for the Cuadrilleros, the hand of the king, and it stayed a residence, in service and under various ownerships, until 1908 when the local council took it over. Today, council meets, the town shows cases and local archives, and you can sit in the patio and watch it all happen. The palace is a treasure house of curiosities, a joy to discover inside and out, a keyhole low enough to show the maintenance of the gardens high above.
