A millennium of history: Sigmundskron Castle

From a medieval fortress to a mountaineering museum, Sigmundskron Castle in South Tyrol brings centuries of European history to life.

Owned by the Firmian family in the 12th century, Sigmundskron Castle stands near Bolzano, southern Italy. Mentioned in 945, it has a rich history that spans over a millennium. Through financial difficulties and ownership changes, the castle fell into disrepair, but was revived in the 18th century by the Count Wolkenstein and again in the 21st century. Today, its ruins offer a glimpse into a bygone era, a testament to the castle’s resilience over the centuries. In 2006, construction work uncovered a Neolithic grave dating back 6,000-7,000 years on the site, linking it to the earliest inhabitants of the area. Sigmundskron Castle remains an important political symbol in South Tyrol.
