A French Fairy Tale: The Rollercoaster Story of Château de Mauléon

Dive into the captivating chronicle of Château de Mauléon, a French castle that danced with destiny, resurrected across a century and a half. Delve into the intriguing episodes that sculpted this renowned artifact.

Originally a humble motte and bailey castle in 1080, nestled on the lofty ridge of Saint-Melaine district, this French gem, Château de Mauléon, experienced its first bump in 1587 when King Henri of Navarre succeeded in damaging a portion of it. Fast forward to 1642, and the celebrated Cardinal Richelieu sanctioned the collapse of its walls. How ironic, don't you think? Yet, a tale isn't complete without a hero. And so, along comes Alexis Madelaine Rosalie, Duc de Chatillon, who reinstated the central building, affectionately known as ‘le Palais’ by the locals for its duties, primarily serving as a law court and bailiff's residence. The property then swayed through the hands of various owners until finally landing in the city's possession in 1990. It was only in 1995 that this historic dance with time was recorded in the annals; a decision made by decree on the 18th of April.
