A Giant 100-Footer Hits CMU's Campus in '06

When a hundred-foot Steel Galoot pops up in CMU's courtyard in '06, some students go on the fost, nicknaming it 'ugly mug' and 'huge hubcap'. But is it all that ghastly?

In the hub of Carnegie Mellon University, 2006 brought quite a show: a steel giant, touching the sky at a hundred feet, dubbed 'Walking to Heaven'. This sculptural Symphony was the brainchild of artist, Jonathan Borofsky, a present to CMU from Trustee Jill Gansman Kraus and her partner, Peter Kraus. Sculptures of similar vintage from Mr. Borofsky could be found soaring high in New York's Rockefeller Center, Dallas' Nasher Sculpture Center, and Seoul's Kiturami Homsys Co. building. This new CMU landmark, however, didn't win universal approval, causing a stir with labels like ‘ugly mug’ and ‘huge hubcap’ from a few perturbed students. The structure had to be hoisted right off the campus in 2009 due to certain structural hashes.
