The Wightman School Community Building in Squirrel Hill

Explore the history of the Wightman School, a historic building in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

Located in the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Wightman School is a historic building in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. Built in 1897, it was originally an elementary school named Colfax No. 5. It was later renamed the Wightman School in honor of Thomas Wightman, the owner of the Thomas Wightman Glass Company.

The school operated as an elementary school from its opening in 1897 until the Pittsburgh Public Schools closed it in June 1980. Following its closure, the building began a new chapter as a community space.

Since 1981, this 40,000-square-foot space has been used as a community building. It serves as a home base for several small businesses and nonprofit organizations. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
