Torre de l'Esparra

Torre de l'Esparra, situated at the top of a turret near the raval de L'Esparra, is a medieval fortress. It was first mentioned in the 14th century as a castell or fortress of the Roqueta. The source material suggests that it was built by the Xammar (or Xetmar) family, who owned the castle later. In 1294, Jaume II forced Ponç Hug IV d'Empúries to lift the siege of the castle of l'Esparra. The tower stands 10 meters tall, with a trapezoidal ground plan, and has two floors.

Beneath the upper door, there are two holes meant to support the beams of a platform to climb the tower. The tower is about 11.45 meters long and 10.35 meters wide, with a thickness of 2.10 meters. It has seventeen spitelles on the ground floor, and on the upper floor, there are spitelles on each side of the western door and on the north and south facades, and four on the eastern facade. The remains of a fortified enclosure surround the tower, but only a few remain.
