What was the western bastion of Genoa's last fort built for? The tower at Capigliolu is one of a series of coastal defences constructed by the Republic of Genoa between 1530 and 1620 to stem the attacks by Barbary pirates. However, it was also used for a purpose that may be unexpected.

Torra di Capigliolu is one of 90 Genoese coastal defence towers in Corsica. Built in 1581, it stands at 91 meters high on the Punta Capigliolo headland, north of the Golfo di Ajaccio. It was a Genoese power show in the Mediterranean, built to stem the attacks by Barbary pirates, but its exact purpose remains a subject of interest and research.
