A statue in Bastelica, France, honors a local hero

Sampiero Corso, a figure from Bastelica, Corsica, was born in his hometown. The statue honoring him stands in the hameau of Santo, in front of the St Michel church. The statue was inaugurated in 1890 and was created by French sculptor Vital Gabriel Dubray. It is 3.5 meters tall and installed on a granite pedestal that is 7 meters high. Three bas-reliefs on the pedestal depict key events in Sampiero Corso's life, such as the siege of Perpignan and his assassination. A plaque commemorative is also present. The statue's pointing sword towards the sky symbolizes Sampiero Corso's resistance, a characteristic that made him a local hero. The statue is protected as it is listed as a historic monument since February 8, 2008.
