A Genoese guardian at Capu Neru

At an elevation of 119 metres, the Tower of Capu Neru watches the waves from the Capu Neru headland, a job it began in the 16th century. The Genoese built coastal defences here for a century, to combat the privateers raiding their way to Italy. The view beyond is Corsica, and the view beneath is the dark secrets of the Mediterranean. Capu Neru is a heritage monument: the Republic of Genoa built these towers primarily to stand against the Barbary pirates who threatened the region. You can climb up here on the warpath, or you can remember the men who came for Jerusalem.
