Nestled in the comfort of its Roman-stone cradle, Pernes-les-Fontaines has been enclosed within walls that have stood since the last millennium – a cozy hold since the 14th century. The transformation it went through in the 14th century, and then again in 1320 when it became the capital of Comtat Venaissin, can still be seen in its grand gates, Porte Notre-Dame and Porte Saint-Gilles. It's peculiar, isn't it, that folks like Carpentras and the church Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, have been duped into believing that Porte Notre-Dame debuted in 1528 when, in actuality, it didn't make its entrance until 1548. Now, the oldest gate, a remnant of the 14th century, can still be found proudly standing next to Porte Saint-Gilles.
