There's a certain friend at Devils Tower National Monument, a silent and steadfast companion. Once, it was a beacon of warmth amidst the iron ore processing plants, offering solace on those chilly days. Strangely enough, the plants ceased operation in 1983, yet left behind a series of tailings. But the story doesn't end there. For the August Tower, a tower built in 1952, continued to stand, lounging in wait for this very moment. And now, it stands proudly at the entrance of the visitor center, its silhouette silhouetted against the horizon, a reassuring presence for the tourists passing by.
It's unique among towers, still dutifully performing its task day in and day out. The water flows through it, carrying away the heat from the iron factories, and the fresh air flows back, a soothing breath of relief. As you walk along, passing the location of a former iron processing plant, look up and there you'll see the pipe that ascends into the sky. And there, you'll find the August Tower, extending a crisp respite to those who seek it.
