Teapot Rock: A Curious Natural Landmark

Teapot Rock: A Curious Natural Landmark

Discover the peculiar teapot-shaped rock that once stood tall and whole in Wyoming, but lost its 'handle' and 'spout' over time.

Teapot Rock, also known as Teapot Dome, is an unusual geological formation and nearby oil field in Wyoming. Its peculiar shape resembles a teapot, lending it its curious name and attracting visitors since its discovery. The Teapot Dome Oil Field, located about 6 miles east, was part of the Naval Petroleum Reserve Number Three, a program to ensure the U.S. Navy, which was converting to oil-fired boilers, would have sufficient fuel reserves in an emergency. Today, visitors can see Teapot Rock up close and marvel at its unique shape.
