The only master's degree in puppetry in the United States

The University of Connecticut is the only place in the country where you can study the art of puppetry at a graduate level.

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry houses over 2,500 puppets from across the globe. The collection includes marionettes, glove puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets, body puppets, and stage materials.

This collection is one of the three largest in the United States. The museum also holds the largest media collection on the subject in the country. It contains over 700 audio-visual items and a research archive of more than 2,500 books and scripts about the history of puppet theater.

Frank W. Ballard founded the first graduate and undergraduate programs in puppetry in the United States here. Today, UConn remains the only institution in the country offering a master's degree in the field.

You can visit the museum at the Storrs Center near the main campus. The Janney Library holds the research archives and is open to visiting researchers by appointment.
