The Main Street Historic District is a historic district located in Willimantic, Connecticut, encompassing the commercial business district of the city. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and was increased in size in 1992 to include the Hall and Bill building on North Street. The district is approximately 21 acres in size and contains 62 buildings, including the Willimantic Footbridge. The area was once the site of several textile mills and was a major trading center in the region during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
The village of Willimantic Falls dates back to 1706, when the first sawmill and gristmill were built at the junction of the Natchaug and Willimantic Rivers. Two new developments are being built in the Main Street Historic District that will add over 100 new residential units to Main Street. One of the developments will be a conversion of the historic Foster Building at 650-664 Main Street into nearly 50 brand-new all-electric apartments, while the other will be a new building at 804 Main Street, featuring over 58 new apartments, aimed at college students. Both projects are expected to be completed by 2026.
