The tale-tale tower of Salers

Climb the twisted stair of the Beffroi, and you might hear the sound it made. This tower on Salers' skyline is not a fortress, a belfry or a bell tower - it's just a tale, spoken in droves. Built in the 15th century, the Beffroi grew softer, a finger-tapping 'beff' rather than a loud peal, and that's what the locals called it. But why, or what it stood for, remains a wonder. Salers was a medieval market town, when merchants walked from village to village selling their wares, and towns competed to become the hub. Here, the mayor sat in the tower, watching for the enemy arriving across the plain.
