The Castle of Apchon: A Notorious Noble's Nest in Hautee-Auvergne

Delve into the history of the Castle of Apchon, a notorious stronghold hidden in the village of the same name in the Cantal, steeped in secrets and whispers from the Hundred Years War.

In the heart of the picturesque village of Apchon, Cantal, resides the Knightly House of Apchon - one of the most notorious noble houses of Haute-Auvergne [1]. Built in the 14th century and reconstructed between 1408 and 1422, this medieval marvel was situated strategically amidst territories claimed by the English and the King of France during the Hundred Years War. A curious past laces the Castle of Apchon, having been under siege numerous times during the conflict. It was used as a launching point for conquest of the Limousin, the last sighting of which was recorded in 1760. Perched at an elevation of 1100 meters above sea level, this basaltic fortress boasts an enclosure with five round towers and two corner towers. Designated as a French historic monument in 2012, the municipal council of Apchon initiated efforts to preserve and protect the site.
