The Statue of Juan Pablo II in Oviedo, Spain

The Monument to Pope John Paul II, situated in Plaza Juan Pablo II of the city of Oviedo, Principado de Asturias, Spain, is one of over a hundred urban sculptures that adorn the city's streets. Created in 2006 by Vicente Menéndez-Santarúa Prendes, the statue features a hyperrealistic figure of the pope as a wanderer, evoking his walk through the Picos de Europa during his visit to Asturias. The statue is made of marine bronze and the landscape of the Picos de Europa is depicted in the pavement adoquines. The statue also includes Juan Pablo II wearing a staff, recalling a gift given to Karol Wojtyła by a pastor during his visit to a national park.
