The unwillingly standing spire of St Mark's Church, Preston

St Mark's Church, located in Preston, Lancashire, England, is a Grade II* listed building designed by E. G. Paley in 1862-1863. The church, set to overshadow the nearby Roman Catholic Church of St Walburge, features a towering spire, a claim it has held since its inception. The tower, presently in four unequal stages, with a narrow octagonal stair turret at the southeast corner, is crowned with a slate roof and rises into the tallest church tower spire in Britain. This journey of growth began in the 1920s with an extension of the spire, and later in 1960s with the addition of a lighting unit. The story continues to unfold with plans to add more height.
