The Remains of Hayne's Cave Battery

Hayne’s Cave Battery, located in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, is the remains of two gun positions that made up an artillery battery on the west side of the territory at Hayne’s Cave. The battery, which was first occupied during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), officially dates back to 1788 but has a plaque labelled '1903'. It takes its name from Captain Haynes, the garrison quartermaster who oversaw its construction in 1787-1788 and who also began the construction of Queen’s Road.

While the Great Siege predates the battery, it is often associated with it due to its strategic position. Visitors can see the remains of one of the two 4-inch QF gun positions which were installed in 1904 and are approximately 40 meters apart. However, it's important to note that the battery can be reached via a walk along the scenic Royal Anglian Way, as the story's use of the phrases 'Upper Rock' and 'Queen's Road' may confuse some visitors. The cave interior was later repurposed as a housing space for water tanks and pumps.
