The Pulchra Leonina: Where Gothic Art and History Intertwine

The Pulchra Leonina, located in the heart of León, Spain, stands as a magnificent example of Gothic art and architecture. Dedicated to Saint Mary, mother of Jesus, this cathedral is known as the Pulchra Leonina because of its beauty. It was started in the 14th century by Master Mason Enrique, and by the mid 15th century, it was almost completed. The cathedral is one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass in the world, with nearly 1,800 square meters of stained glass windows dating from the 14th to the 15th century.

Among the many treasures of the cathedral, the Plateresque iron grillwork screen or reja in the wall behind the sepulcher of King Ordoño deserves special mention. The cathedral museum also houses a large collection of medieval art, including works by Juan de Juni, Gregorio Fernández, Mateo Cerezo, and a triptych of the School of Antwerp, as well as a manuscript in the Leonese language, the Nodicia de Kesos, and nearly 1,500 pieces, including 50 Romanesque sculptures and a Mozarabic bible.
