Located in the Kullaberg nature reserve of southern Sweden, the secluded land of Ladonia was established in 1996 by artist Lars Vilks. This mysterious micronation was the result of a protracted legal battle with local authorities over two sculptures: Nimis and Arx. Nimis, made of 75 tonnes of driftwood, was built in 1980. Joseph Beuys acquired Nimis in 1984, and following his death, it was sold to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In 1999, Vilks crafted another sculpture named Omphalos, but it was taken down due to controversy over its depiction of religious figures.
