The Biologiska Museet: A Museum in the Reversed Swedish Outdoors

The Biologiska Museet, a museum located on Djurgården in Stockholm, presents the Swedish outdoors in reverse. Polar bears crowd a summer-green tundra, tropical birds strut through a snow-white winter landscape, and the wolves of northern Scandinavia roam a lush, sun-kissed forest. The museum, constructed by the architect Carl Hellsten in 1891, houses a collection of European birds and mammals, including a display of Scottish highlands and African plains. Each exhibit invites you to walk through the transitions of seasons, the North to the South, and the entire continent in miniature. It is a journey of itself, a glimpse into the world as it once was, or could be again. The artist Bruno Liljefors created some of the backdrops for the dioramas.
