Bågskytten Milles

Bågskytten, created by Carl Milles, is a twelve-meter-high sculpture that stands outside Liljevalchs Konsthall on Södra Djurgården in Stockholm. Made between 1913 and 1919, the statue features a man in an athletic stance with a drawn bow and arrow, standing on a stylized eagle. A smaller version of Bågskytten was placed at Waldemarsudde in 1913. The sculpture is a granite column that supports a diabase eagle. The human figure on the eagle is depicted in a athletic stance with a drawn bow and arrow. The star constellation Orion is partially visible from Sweden, not only on the southern star map. In Greek mythology, the constellation is named after the god Pans' son, Krotos, who invented the bow and arrow. Krotos was also an expert archer. The eagle, an old symbol of power, was one of Milles favorite motifs.
