The Helmet Forgotten by the River

On the Plaza del Mercado in Jerez de la Frontera, southern Spain, a 300-year-old building houses an even older secret. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal was established in 1873 but one relic, Roman in origin, pierced the air on Spanish soil 14 decades earlier. Unearthed near the city's Charterhouse, the relic lay hidden until 1917, when a local poet found its resting place. Yet the relic, a Corinthian helmet, remained a mystery. Who left it by the Guadalete River and for what purpose? The helmet, rare in Spain, is now part of Jerez museum's collection, but its true past, as remote as the Charterhouse itself, remains elusive.
