Initially mounted on a temporary stand, the General Desaix Memorial, a bronze homage to a Napoleonic-era soldier, was later in 1903 elevated onto a granite dais, festooned with French inscriptions. Fast-forwarding to 1992, both the statue and the pedestal were flagged as historical treasures. This monument hearkens back to General Desaix and his comrades-in-arms who, in the Battle of Marengo of 1800, tragically bid their last. The battle was no whodunit, but rather a saga of valiant endeavors.
