The 19th-Century Timber Villa of Salazie

The 19th-Century Timber Villa of Salazie

Crafted from timber that defies decay, this 19th-century dwelling is a historic monument in the heights of Salazie.

Deep within the natural cirque of Salazie lies the island of Hell-Bourg. In a time of old, the wealthy of Réunion fled the coastal heat to seek the mountain air. They raised a structure of rot-resistant timber from the island itself, built to endure the climate of the heights.

Within the annex, one can observe utensils from another era, including ancestors of the refrigerator, a bathtub, and bamboo crafts. There is also a collection of different wood essences gathered from across the island.

Beyond the walls, the tropical garden is divided into sections for medicinal herbs and aromatic plants. It also features a greenhouse for orchids and carnivorous plants. Towering tree ferns grow among the exuberant flora characteristic of the region.

The villa was listed as a historic monument on April 6, 1989. Today, the building's structure remains original, while the interiors have been renovated to remain identical to their original state.
