Fuerte Príncipe Alfonso: A 19th-century Neomedieval fort in Ceuta

Located in Barrio del Príncipe, this 19th-century Neomedieval fortress was built to secure the border and dominate the surrounding terrain.

In Barrio del Príncipe lies the Fuerte del Príncipe Alfonso, a Neomedieval fort projected in 1860 by Engineer Commander Paulino Aldaz. Situated on a slope, it was designed to dominate the Arroyo de las Bombas and the Tarajal de Ceuta border crossing to prevent possible aggressions.

The fort features a rectangular floor plan with a central courtyard under which lies a cistern. It includes a dry moat and arrowhead-shaped bastions on three of its flanks, except for the south side, which has three embrasures. The structure consists of a basement, a ground floor, and a roof with a battery.

Constructed from concrete and lime, masonry, solid brick, and ashlar, the fort has two orders of rifle and small-caliber artillery fire. It had a capacity of 300 men and was built as part of the 19th-century Neomedieval forts intended to secure the border.
