The Ruins of Baker's Fort in Gulu District

A plaque on a remaining wall in Patiko marks the site where Sir Samuel Baker founded a fort occupied by Emin and Gordon.

A lonely wall stands amidst the weeds in Ajulu parish. Upon its face, a plaque on a grain storage building reads "Fatiko 1872 -88, founded by Sir Samuel Baker, occupied by Emin and Gordon".

Construction of the fort, also known as Baker's Fort, was completed in 1872. After Baker left in 1888, the fort was used by Emin Pasha and Charles Gordon while they served as Governor of the Equatorial Province of the British Uganda Protectorate.

Ruins of the fort remain in Patiko sub-county, Aswa County, Gulu district. The site is open to the public subject to a fee levied by the subcounty. The Ugandan Government is currently planning on turning the fort into a fully recognized national tourism site.
