André Estienne: The Drummer Who Danced on Arcole's Battlefield, Leaving a Mark

André Estienne, a Frenchman in the Italian Army, famed for his valor at the Battle of Arcole, now boasts a commemorative monument in Cadenet, France.

Born on the 13th of October, 1777, André Estienne marched the drum for the Italian Army led by Napoleon Bonaparte. Known for his defiance at the Battle of Arcole, which unfolded on the 16th of November, 1796, Estienne found himself enlisted in the Army of Italy as a tambour following a harsh winter that shrank his family's funds, nudging him towards the French Army for a beat. This battle displayed his courage. Promoted to the rank of captain, he received the Legion of Honor in 1804. Today, Cadenet, France, home to a monument in honor of his valor, carved in 1894, and declared a historical landmark since 2009, stands as a testament to this drummer's bravery.
