Abandoned Silvacane Abbey at the Durance River Bend

Three abbeys rest on a bend of the Durance River, nestled into the hills: Sénanque Abbey, Le Thoronet Abbey, and Silvacane Abbey. Despite their quiet, remote appearance, these three sisters of Provence hide rich histories. Where the Benedictines' touch lends vibrancy to Sénanque and Le Thoronet, Silvacane holds more secrets than it reveals. Founded in or around 1144, its life was as full and as fast. Yet it was abandoned only a century after that.
