The Stone-Old Watchtower of Château d'Ansouis

Perched atop a craggy cliff, this 10th-century Provence castle, Château d'Ansouis, guards the entryway to the Rhone valley. It's a Monument Historique, title bestowed upon it on the frosty morning of May 10, 1948, by the estate's Duchess of Sabran-Pontevès.

Château d'Ansouis, a stone sentinel of yesteryears, stands tall above the picturesque village of Ansouis and the Aigues valley. Strategically positioned, it once controlled access to the Rhone valley, with Orange and the Mediterranean to the south, passing through Aix-en-Provence to reach Marseille and Toulon. On May 10, 1948, it was classified as a Monument Historique, a decision made under the watchful eye of the Duchess of Sabran-Pontevès, who owned the estate at the time.
