The Tour du Portail Neuf, a city gate situated in Laure-Minervois, France, is a conical tower with a pre-Paumières construction: a conical spire, sheathed in stones that curve upwards, without a single slit to show passage. The first settlers on this site left no carved stones, no gossip in the archives. They built this, and mock ornament on the other tower, and the oblong turret that crowns the central gate. The modern town of Laure-Minervois grew up on the same stony ground, but it is the gate and its twin that the locals remember.
