The Cistercian Monastery of Santa María de Huerta on the Jalón River

The Monastery of Santa María de Huerta was founded by King Alfonso VII of León and Castile in 1179. Initially located in Cántabos, Fuentelmonte, the monastery was relocated due to poor water supply. King Alfonso VII promised during the siege of Coria to build a monastery, and he brought a community of Cistercian monks from the abbey of Berdoues in Gascony (France) to make this promise come true. Saint Martin of Hinojosa was the fourth abbot of the monastery and was responsible for significant remodeling of the monastery to include conventional Cistercian features. The revised building still stands today.
