The Timeless Tale of the Chesapeake's Wacky Hooper Island Lighthouse

Join us for a right chuckle as we follow the offbeat and endearing odyssey of Maryland's eccentric Hooper Island Light through the ages

Nestled westward off Middle Hooper Island, in the Chesapeake Bay's heart, the Hooper Island Light, proposed in 1897 but not until 1901 making its entrance, saw the Variety Iron Works Company late on deliveries. Oh well, such are life's twists, indeed! Instead, a pneumatic process handled the foundation-laying, pushing water away while carving out the interior. The result? Hooper Island Light towering over its fellow Maryland lighthouses, decked with a watch room and a lantern at the peak. Quite a roaring success for its time, mate!

In the original blueprint, a fog bell called Lower Gallery home, but the 1930s brought change, and the fog bell moved up to the watch room level. A backup fog horn joined the party too around that era, along with light signature adjustments. The 1960s brought automation, sending off the old fourth-order Fresnel lens in 1976, ushering in a solar-powered lamp instead.

Enshrined in the National Register of Historic Places on December 2, 2002, the Hooper Island Light stands as a vital Aid to Navigation. Its overnight stays are restricted due to an agreement with the U.S. Navy's Naval Air Systems Command, whose danger zone it lies within. Selling for $192,000 on September 22, 2022, it now belongs to The Lighthouse Centers, tirelessly working on restorations and documenting the journey on their YouTube channel.
