The Chapel of Contested Beliefs: Four Religions in One

The Chapelle de Walcourt is a 17th-century Catholic chapel located in Givet, France. The original chapel was built between 1602 and 1604, dedicated to Notre-Dame de Walcourt, venerated in the Basilique Saint-Materne, in Walcourt, Belgium. However, its architect's name remains unknown. After construction, the chapel was destroyed in 1781, but rebuilt by the industrial and mayor of Givet, Toupet des Vignes, who blessed it in September 1784. It was then sold as 'bien national' in 1796, but the buyer failed to pay, so the chapel reverted back to the ownership of the Église Saint-Hilaire. Over the centuries, it has been used by three different religions: Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. Today, only the two entrances remain of the cemetery, as it was abandoned from 1918. The chapel was classified as a monument historique in 1984, and fully restored in 2007-2008.
