In the heart of Washington, D.C, a touching tribute to the Afro-American soldiers of the American Civil War

The African American Civil War Memorial, found at the intersection of Vermont Avenue, 10th Street, and U Street in the nation's capital, is a poignant testament to the 209,145 Afro-American soldiers and sailors who bravely fought for the Union during the Civil War. Commissioned by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) in 1993, the memorial was completed in 1997 by sculptor Ed Hamilton. The centerpiece, 'The Spirit of Freedom', and the surrounding pedestrian area with curved panels inscribed with the men's names, are managed by the National Park Service.
