Dupont Circle, a historic roundabout park and neighborhood in Washington, D.C, was once home to a forgotten stream: Slash Run. Running from 15th Street and Columbia Road, the stream flowed through Dupont Circle before being covered in a sewer line during the 1890s, a change made to improve the neighborhood. The Dupont Circle neighborhood and its surrounding historic district, located in Northwest D.C, is known for its high concentration of embassies, many located on Embassy Row, and think tanks, many located on Think Tank Row. Before the improvements, it was home to a brickyard and slaughterhouse. It was intended to be rectangular according to the original L’Enfant Plan, but the improvements altered the area’s shape and character. Slash Run was a vital part of the area, providing the much-needed fresh water for the brickyards and the residences.
