Tucked away in the commune of Saint-Arnoult, Calvados, France, rests the mesmerizing Prieuré de Saint-Arnoult, a historical treasure dating back to at least the 10th century. The site is a complex ensemble comprising a parish church and a prioral chapel. While the parish church dates back to the 10th century, the priory was founded in 1061 by the Order of Cluny and was dependent on the abbey Notre-Dame de Longpont.
The building was constructed and developed in several stages throughout the 11th, 13th, 15th, and 17th centuries. The bell tower has existed since the 10th century, but was raised in the 12th and 13th centuries, with further work occurring in the 17th and 18th centuries. During the 14th and 15th centuries, a funerary chapel was built on the north side, and the nave was widened in the 15th century.
By the first quarter of the 18th century, the building was considered degraded and fell into ruins a century later. The ensemble was sold as national property during the French Revolution. Today, these remnants are listed as Historic Monuments. A project to promote local tourism and host cultural events has been under discussion since the beginning of the 21st century.
