The 11th-century castle guarding a strategic valley in Montserrat

The Castle of Alcalans, located on a steep hill in the Montserrat comarca, overlooks the Val d'Alcalà valley. Named after the valley it has controlled for centuries, it was originally built in the 11th century by a king of the Taifa de Valencia. The castle was a strategic stronghold during the rule of the Almohads, a North African imperial dynasty that ruled much of the Maghreb and Al-Andalus. Alfons the Battler, a Christian king, conquered the castle in 1129, weakening the Almoravid status in Eastern al-Andalus.
