Stones Off the Block: A Pebble Path in Chicago's West Pullman

Strut down Michigan Avenue in Chicago's West Pullman and you'll run into something that's off the beaten track: 600 stones, each one dedicated to a young 'un who fell victim to gun violence since 2007. Swing by this memorial to pay tribute to the victims and get the lowdown on the gang that's on a mission to support at-risk, low-income kiddos.

Kids Off the Block (KOB), a stone-based memorial for young ones claimed by gun violence, was set up by Diane Latiker, a mama of eight, who back in 2003, opened up her pad to the youth in her neighborhood. The aim? To guide 'em clear of the unsavory delights of the streets. Since then, KOB has ballooned into an organization bursting with activities – Tutoring and Mentoring, Drama, Music, Sports, Community Service, Local and Out-of-Town Travel, Job Readiness, GED Preparation, Health, Fitness and Nutrition, Cultural Arts, partnered with organizations such as Roseland Safety Networks, CAPs, St.

John Missionary Baptist Church, Nehemiah Restoration Coalition, Illinois Healthcare Consortium, Phalanx Family Services, Worldvision and Greater Roseland Chamber of Commerce. Not every kid KOB helps is a gangbanger or dropout, but the ones that are, they could use a leg up. Almost two decades on, KOB has assisted over 2,000 participants.
